What's New and What's In the Works?

Iowa Testing is complete!  If your student missed a day last week, we will be sure to arrange time for them to complete the testing.   I welcome back our regular schedule and some fun new learning adventures.  Here's a taste of some things that are happening in our room and some upcoming events:

-NANOWRIMO!  It stands for National November Writing Month and it's a month long novel writing project the kids will embark on, starting this week. I have prepared red binders for each student with Nanowrimo materials to get them thinking like the wonderful novelists they are and can be!  We will be reflected on the successes of the authors of our own choice texts while putting what we learn into our own novels.  As they contain their "inner editor" to unleash character development, setting details and concoct conflict and resolution, they will be drafting and revising with my support, but most importantly the support of their peers.  This was one of my favorite projects last year and I anticipate this novel unit to be quite special with this group of fifth graders.  You can expect to see Red Binders come home periodically.

Check out the site:  http://ywp.nanowrimo.org/

-Parent-Teacher Conferences - November 1st, 8th and 9th. If you are unsure of your time or haven't received an update reminder that you would like from signupgenius.com, please let me know. I look forward to sharing your student's progress, passions and learning from the start of this school year.

-Halloween Party - next week on October 31st. Thank you to the parents who are providing treats for this fun event!  The Halloween parade will begin at 2:00pm and our room party will follow the parade.

-Life Skills - Our Life Skills unit has begun in our regular science time slot. This unit will cover one and a half more weeks of instruction that guides students to consider the decisions they can make to be healthy, happy people as they get older.  The lessons cover topics such as Self-Image, Decision Making, Smoking Bio-feedback, Drug and Alcohol Choices and Media Influence. If you would like more information or materials regarding this curriculum, please send me an email and I'd be happy to send information home or meet with you to discuss your questions.

Have a great week!

Go Hoover Hawks!

Schedule Changes - Oct 15th-Oct. 19th

-->
Greetings Hoover Fifth Grade Parents!
This upcoming week, students will be taking the Iowa Assessments (formally the ITBS). Most of our mornings will be dedicated to specials classes (PE, Art, media, guidance and music) and taking the tests.  A huge thank you to volunteers who are bringing treats. This will certainly be a special break in the morning after focusing on the tests.  In the afternoon, our schedule will be quite similar to our regular plan - Lang. Arts, Math, Social Studies and Science.  This week, we continue in our life skills unit during our science time. This Life Skills unit, which aims to give students opportunities to learn and reflect on how best to make healthy decisions for themselves, will last no more than two weeks. We will then start our next science unit: Mysterious Powders.  If you have any questions regarding our modified schedule or the Iowa Assessments, please let me know.

"What's Happening in Room 12?" by Sofia and Kennedy

Hi! Its Kennedy here and I want to talk to you about what we have been doing in Language Arts this week. In the back of our room we have three desks set up as stations. Think and Write station, ABC word study, and the Comprehension and Fluency Work station. In science we are studying the hay infusion. Ms. Ahlers opened it for just a little bit and stunk really bad! Sofia and Rose were sitting right next to it and they had to hold their noses. In science we are also studying micro worlds. In the computer lab we are looking at videos and activities that help us learn and study microbes.

Hi! It’s Sofia and I’ll tell you what we’re learning about in Social Studies.  In Social Studies we are learning about power and authority.  We also got to study different rocks to try to figure out what purpose they were used for.  We came to the conclusion that they were part of a fire ring.  In math we are working on estimation and different methods for addition, subtraction, and multiplication.  WARNING: MATH TEST ON THURSDAY!  The things on the test will be: lattice multiplication, story problems, estimation, and different methods for addition, subtraction, and multiplication. Now we have a little quiz for you.

Quiz!

Hey it’s Kennedy. I’m back! This time I’ll be telling you about our studies this week. We are going to be smelling and examining our “hay infusion.” Like I said it smells pretty bad. It basically smells just like a boiled rotten egg. I think even outside we will have to plug our noses!
                        -KENNEDY

Hi! It’s Sofia here and now I’ll tell you about our Spanish lessons.  Right now we’re working on weather and seasons.  For example, right now the season is el otoño, or fall.  We are also learning new phrases, or frases. One of the frases  we are learning is “what’s up?” or que onda?

Super Carrot
by
Christopher Onate
One day in Carrotopillis Super Carrot had returned and a fellow carrot said, “Look its Super Carrot he’s back and he locks stronger and better than ever” and Super Carrot kept his job as a news reporter for Carrotopillis and he had a talk with his boss Mr.Carrotman and he gave Super Carrot a promotion to assistant manager because he was doing a great job and it was a little tough for him because he has to save the city and attend meetings that were long and boring so he had to decide ether saving the world or being a assistant manager so he asked his friend Bat Carrot and he said, “saving the world is more important than helping accompany that gives out news” so he quit his jobL and if his powers were to go away he would still get his job back because they said if he were to come they would give him back his position. Super Carrot went on lots of adventures he once went to Hawaii to stop a volcano from erupting and he saved Hawaii from turning to ash.
When Super Carrot got too old he got married and had a son who one day would fight crime.
