Mary and Ellis News

            Hello! This week we are learning about cause and effect from Mrs. Jacobsen. We also read a story about sea turtles that need rescuing. It is a wonderful story that is very touching. In Spanish we are learning our numbers and colors so we can make those “fortune” tellers. In math we are trying different types of addition, subtraction, and in media we are playing a really fun game called “Draw a Stickman”, which is very fun to some kids in our class. In the social studies classroom with our host and teacher Mrs. Whittington, we are learning about Native Americans, where they settled, and what artifacts they might have used. Now here is a puzzle to try with Pi!!!

Hi it’s Mary. This week is spirit week. Monday is pajama day. Tuesday is wacky sock and hair day. Wednesday is crazy hat and neon day. Speaking of days here are the days in Spanish. lunes= Monday, martes= Tuesday, miercoles= Wednesday, jueves= Thursday, viernes= Friday, sabado=Saturday and domingo=Sunday.

Hola! It’s Ellis. This week we are using a math puzzle called Ken Ken to have fun. Lots of kids like it. Okay, maybe only few kids like it. Okay, maybe I’m the only one that likes it. But as I was saying, it is a fun math puzzle in my opinion. I say “Ken Ken Weee!” I hear Groans.   Today we are learning more about cause and effect from Mrs. Jacobsen. In science, we are learning about cells. Did you know that a drop of pond water can have at least 2000 cells? That’s pretty cool. Also, in reading, some kids are reading a book called Frindle about a creative kid, and some are reading a book about a city boy who has to go camping. It has been an exciting week! WARNING on Wednesday we have a social studies test. Study!

It’s Mary again. On Tuesday some people mixed some organisms called Blepharisma and Vinegar Eels in science. I did it, and there was an interesting result. All of the Blepharisma swam to one side and all the Vinegar
Eels swam to the other. It was really cool. Now here are some interesting questions: Which weighs more: A pound of iron or a pound of feathers? The answer is that they both weigh the same, although they have different mass. Here is another: What is the sum of 111+212+313? And the last one: Name the prime numbers in this series: 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15,16,17,18,19,and 20

Thank you

THANK YOU for coming to the 2012 Hoover Curriculum night, last Thursday!  It was a pleasure to see many of you and meet some new families as well.  If you were unable to make it, all of the information should have been brought home with your student last Friday. In this folder, there should be a curriculum map, a class schedule and a letter from your student.

REMINDER: Each day this week will be a themed dress-up day to celebrate Homecoming week at City High.  Tomorrow's theme is PJ/favorite sport dress up day.

In language arts we’ve started a new unit about theme.
Theme is the moral of the story.
In Spanish we’ve learned the days of the week song.
Some important news is that Curriculum night is this Thursday.

In Language arts we started a new unit as Oliver said. We read a story called
Elisas diary.  In Spanish we did learn a days of the week song in Spanish and we sing like if it’s Monday then we sing the Monday part and so on. This coming Thursday is Curriculum night. Oh I almost forgot the book fair is this week  from Monday to Friday. Here is an activity for you to try.

Wednesday- Thursday

Hello this is Hailey and I am going to give u a little bit about today and plans for tomorrow.
So curriculum night is tomorrow and the book fair still continues. Just a reminder Curriculum night is 7:00 Thursday night and we still have a surprise for parents to see. We had a math test last Friday and sent as homework for a parent signature (PS) on our math test. So Tuesday in Science we looked at Volvox and Monday onions and Volvox is some sort of green alga.

Student Writers - Cool Chronicles - Sept 10th

In Spanish we have been learning all the colors. And in science we are using and learning about microscopes like we’re using newspaper clippings and microfiches.      Sometimes we’re reading THE CITY OF EMBER so far we’re at the part where the little girl is remembering about how her parents died and the author is talking about how it’s only her grandma, her little sister and herself. WARNING MATH TEST ON FRIDAY.

In science we have been studying and using microscopes. In Spanish we are working on using sentences. In P.E. we are on our Frisbee unit and we are working on throwing Frisbees. In math we are now working on factor strings and powers of a number.

The Pluto Party

Marsha is a Marshan from Mars. Born on Mars in a city called Marshanville. One day she got invited to a disco party on Pluto. The invite was luckily written in her language called- Marlin. Her language is very complicated. All the little Marshans had to learn it at age 1. Anyway, back to the party. She couldn’t wait! She picked out a beautiful turquoise dress with little transparent sequins all over. Her shoes were purple with bedazzled heals and everything! I went downstairs to show off to my sister and parents. But about halfway down the stairs I realized I didn’t have a ride to the party! I couldn’t possibly get one now I had to leave! But then my dad shouted for me to come down so I got really nervous. I couldn’t tell them I didn’t have a ride! I was in deep trouble.
I zipped down the stairs drank a big glass of cranberry juice and that’s when my mom told me she got a limo for me. I couldn’t believe how great my parents were to do that. I leaped out the door with joy. I was so excited because my parents had also arranged for my friend Marsh to come with me. “Now I will have a dance partner!” I squealed. I probably freaked a couple of people out by my screaming and weird faces. I looked like I was going to explode!  Really, I looked really weird. I know on Earth you guys have those weird limos with wheels but ours are space shuttles with fancy activities set for 2. Marsh and I couldn’t wait to get there we were like Kindergarteners asking are we there yet?
When we got there we suddenly didn’t want to stay. There were people acting like we were from Neptune or something. I went crazy and suddenly yelled, “What, we’re not from Neptune!” “We were invited and we are not leaving!”
That’s when I realized we were just making a pit stop we were on Jupiter. Some guy starting creeping toward us with a fist I got super scared.
I started screaming my head off and running around and I had no interest in getting hurt before a party. My dad tried to protect me but he got thrown of the surface. Then Marsh did a great job throwing all but one guy off the surface. The guy he left was probably the strongest fastest and most hurtful person in the Milky Way. Luckily he didn’t want anything to do with us. He just wanted to be left alone and eat his potato chips. So we left him alone and all went our own ways, Us trying to get back to Mars and him trying to eat a sandwich with everything on it. A big sandwich!

Cool Chronicles
